Audrey: Early settlers went to the Indians for advice. That was before. Indians owned everything. Settlers kept fencing off land!

Dick Campbell, he had an Indian friend, lived down in the orchard across from us. There were good friends.

Audrey: That is good as he has girls and now a boy to carry on the family name.

Audrey: Dad, he never opened his mouth. He didn’t care whether we had boys or girls. We got along pretty good.

Audrey: That was easy; I wanted the Spencer name to continue, so Spencer ‘s name was easy for me. Kent must have been in the news so we named him Spencer Kent.

Audrey: Douglas is an all Scot name. Old Winston Churchill was in the news and Winston’s mother was a Spencer and I liked the sound of Douglas Winston.

Audrey: Crystal Gayle was a movie star with long, long brown hair, so I named her Crystal Gay because I thought that was a pretty name also. I liked the sound of Crystal Gay.

Audrey: Of course, that is a flower in Scotland. I chose Dale over Hale or Yale because it rhymed.

Audrey: Deardra was the name of a movie. Joan Crawford^* was in a movie named Deidra. I was pregnant with Dede and I went to the Palace Theatre by myself and saw the movie. I liked the sound of Deardra Dell. It sounded good. It rhymed. I spelled Deardra the way it sounded. Dierdra, the book, was the life story of a girl.**

(Heather: Yes, Deardra was also the name of a book. I’ve tried to find the book, but there are so many numerous ways to spell Deardra–Deidra, Deirdra, Deidre etc–that I have not been able to find it.)

* The name of the  movie with Joan Crawford was “Hollywood Canteen” (1944)

** A book titled “Deirdre” by George Steel was published in 1904.

Audrey: That was easy. My mother was a Vaughn so I wanted the Vaughn name to continue. I got the name, Ray, from Grandma’s sister, Martha’s son. His name was Ray Kirby, Jr. I liked the sound of Vaughn Ray.
